World Scientific invests in MIT Startup Asian ScientistWorld Scientific Publishing Company has taken a stake in the blossoming Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) startup Asian Scientist.

The deal, which consists of a high six-figure sum, seeks to catapult World Scientific to a greater platform of visibility in the scientific content publishing industry.

“With much of the growth in scientific research taking place in Asia and with Asian Scientist as a growing online scientific voice for the region, World Scientific seeks to leverage on its platform to expand its service offering to scientists in the region. There is much synergy that we can achieve through this timely strategic investment in Asian Scientist,” said World Scientific’s executive director Mr Max Phua.

Commenting on the synergy of the partnership, Asian Scientist’s editor-in-chief Dr Juliana Chan said, “This seed funding from World Scientific Publishing will help us expand our coverage in the region and also help us develop our portfolio of science communication services. This expansion will likewise provide World Scientific with a greater exposure of its products, services and brand name.”

Dr Chan founded the online magazine when she observed that Asian researchers had been given sparse coverage by Western-centric portals during her PhD stint at MIT. “Nearly one-third of all scientists are Asian and even more are based in Asia, but I couldn’t find an equivalent science magazine that focused on Asia and Asian researchers.”

One of the key differentiating factors of Asian Scientist that caught the eye of the international publisher was that while other successful publications in Asia focused on information technology (IT) and biotechnology, it has opted for the popular science route by covering everything from clinical research to basic discoveries, space news, nature, and education, and its team consists mainly of professional scientists.

Mr Phua said, “It is critical in this information age to stand out in your content offering in the midst of a myriad of online options. I believe that Asian Scientist will add value to our long-term growth strategy within Asia.”
